Improving global health is more than wanting to help. We must achieve impact and demonstrate population-based improvements, that is, a positive change in the health status of the people of the country we are working in. One of the main keys to sustainable population-based results is having an effective health workforce. For achieving an effective health workforce, we need more than just training nurses, doctors, allied science professionals and community health workers in malaria, TB or HIV/AIDS. We need “Five Main Effective Workforce Development Steps.” Do you have these five steps all in your global health project or program?

  1. Effective up-to-date curricula that includes the latest advances and evidence-based best practices at all the country’s medical and nursing schools using e-textbooks for all future health professionals to study. No more training in hotels and photocopied handouts. Training must strengthen the training institutions, the trainers, and the trainees in developing countries.
  2. Effective teaching methods for the country’s medical and nursing instructors and teachers to teach better and access to simulation facilities for students to practice before they see real patients. No more training done by foreign consultants that do not transfer their teaching to others or lack of training standards. All training must help the countries’ trainers and teachers to be better at what they do.
  3. Effective job descriptions for all medical and nursing staff to be responsible and accountable for applying effective high impact best healthcare practices. No more introducing best practices without ensuring their effective integration into work routines and healthcare procedures.
  4. An effective supervision process and revised supervisors’ job description for all medical and nursing staff to have clear reporting channels and effective support. No more projects that do not strengthen the country’s supervision capacity and structures and that do not sustain quality healthcare delivery.
  5. Effective community-based healthcare delivery procedures that target and serve a known group of the population and that can monitor their well being. No more projects or programs that do not demonstrate population impact.
