Hundreds of Ugandans Are Receiving Lifesaving Healthcare

A Health Worker Establishes Her Own Community-Based Organization

Situation

Christine Namumbya Walubo, known as Tina, works in a community in Uganda known for poor nutrition, poor hygiene, inadequate family planning, antenatal care, post‐natal care, and a high prevalence of HIV. As a Child Survival Program Implementer with Compassion International Tina wanted to learn how to make a difference.

Solutions

Tina participated in RGH’s online 7‐Day Health For All Now (HFAN) program in April 2013. After finishing the program, Christine applied her training and started a new community-based organization (CBO) with a colleague called, “Action Center for Children and Family Affairs.” Although facing many challenges with adult literacy, and the conservative mindsets of colleagues and partners, she began adult literacy classes and made inroads into developing relationships with partner organizations and individual volunteers. Tina says, “Even though I don’t have a clinic of my own, I can still make a difference through the CBO”.

Success

In the short time since she established her organization, Tina has already reached more than 200 households. Among registered beneficiaries she’s seen a reduction in the number of mother to child HIV transmissions, improved home hygiene, and reduced incidences of diarrhea, RTI and malaria. Now 100% of expectant mothers at the center undergo antenatal care and fathers are more involved in parenting and family affairs.

On a personal note, due to the results and motivation she received from the 7‐Day HFAN course, Tina has decided to begin a Masters in Public Health program at the International Health Sciences University. Her goal is to become more relevant to her family, community and nation!

In her own words: “I work with the community and I deal with health related issues and so I thought this program will be of great importance to me in improving my work and have greater impact on the community.”
