More Children Receiving Preventative Healthcare in Tanzania

Maximizing Available Resources to Give Children Access to Insecticide-Treated Nets

Situation

In Tanzania, communicable diseases are still the most common cause of illness and death. HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria are among the priority infectious diseases. Healthcare workers see the need for more aggressive preventive measures.

Solutions

Tatu Mtambalike, who works for the organization Africare, participated in RGH’s online 7‐Day MPH program. Tatu immediately set about involving the community and its leaders in the new project she developed, “Healthy, Educated Children, Now!” (HEC‐N). The project aims at improving the health and wellbeing of 100 children each quarter in the Bahi district in the Dodoma region of Tanzania.

Tatu demonstrated an outstanding ability to take advantage of all assets available in Tanzania, such as the National Voucher Scheme to provide Insecticide‐treated nets (ITNs) to pregnant mothers and children. She also found diversified financing of her HEC‐N project by getting donations from various sources to cover all children that did not have access to ITNs.

Success

Tatu enlisted the support of the district health staff and volunteers and made them part of “her team” by aligning them with her unique mission. She overcame barriers by focusing on small, achievable goals that she could achieve each day, week and month! And she did it all that in about three months’ time! As a certified coach, Tatu now shares her knowledge with partners and stakeholders and empowering them to progressively realize health in their community.

Tatu received a Black Belt in the 7-Day MPH program because of her continuous and incremental progress week after week. Gaining the Black Belt brings the added value of a Coaching Certification.
